Home to one of the National
Liberation movement’s key
ideologists, Karavelov House
consists of two separate
build ings. The winter quarters
were con structed in 1810,
while the summer house,
built over the main entrance,
was added in 1835. Lyuben
Karavelov was a prolific
writer, publisher and fervent
revolu tionary, responsible for
publishing two newspapers
out of Bucharest. The printing
press is on display here in
the winter quarters along
with some of the publica tions
he put together with
fellow revolutionaries.

Georgi Benkovski, who was
born as Gavril Hlutev, became
a revolutionary in Romania.
He returned to Koprivshtitsa
in 1875 to form the legendary
“winged” caval ry detachment
that rallied sup port from local
villages during the April
Uprising. This was the Hlutev
family home and the rooms
contain his revolutionary flag,
Winchester rifle and personal

photo graphs. The veranda has
a replica of one of the cherry-
tree cannons used in the
uprising. The granite monu-
ment on the hillside above
the house portrays a cloaked
Benkovski astride a leaping
horse look ing over his shoul-
der to rouse his rebel army.

This house was built in 1856
for the wealthy merchant,
Nincho Oslekov. Due to space
restrictions, it is asym metrical,
but is otherwise typical of the
National Revival style, with
separate winter and sum mer
quarters. Murals through out
the building depict places
Oslekov visited while on busi-
ness. Views of European cities
decorate the façade, while on
the walls of the Red Room are
paintings of man sions and the
original symmetrical plan
for the house.

The painted front façade of the
Oslekov House

an exhibition of 18th- and
19th-century grey felt rugs,
made in Koprivshtitsa.
