Forty Martyrs in the
Asenova quarter
(see pp626–7). On
the skeleton was a
gold ring and seal
bear ing the name
Kaloyan, which
sug gested that these
may be the remains
of Tsar Kaloyan.
The gold seal of
Tsar Ivan Asen II is
displayed under a
magnifying glass in an adjoin-
ing room. Downstairs are
finds from the Roman city of
Nikopolis ad Istrum, the ruins
of which lie 20 km (12 miles)
north of Veliko Tûrnovo.
