Hilltop Castles and Lush Landscapes
Hilltop ski resorts, spa towns, and the network of hiking trails through the
Thuringian Forest (Thüringer Wald) have transformed the “green heart” of
Germany into a holiday playground. Yet, thanks to its fragmentation into a
patchwork of small duchies in the 16th and 17th centuries, Thuringia (Thüringen)
is just as rich in history and art. References to luminaries such as composer
Johann Sebastian Bach, reformer Martin Luther, and writer and polymath
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe appear regularly on a route that begins at a
fairy-tale castle in Eisenach and winds deep into the Thuringian Forest, a wooded
upland where cozy timber-framed towns and ducal palaces nestle beneath pine-
clad hills. The route emerges from this timeless landscape to veer east toward
its final stop, Weimar, a cradle of culture that appeals to head and heart alike.
