On the Trail of the Sun King

Saxony (Sachsen) promotes itself as the “state of the arts” and its brooding
castles, Gothic hall churches and opulent palaces are fine representatives of
centuries of artistic brilliance. This is a state as rich in landscapes as it is in cul ture.
There is a real sense of transition on this route, as it emerges from the Erzgebirge,
an upland whose old towns are full of mining history, folk crafts, and charm, to
follow the trail of Augustus the Strong, an 18th-century Saxon Sun King who
erected some of the most sensational Baroque architec ture around his capital,
Dresden. The mood changes again as the route travels east along the Elbe into
Saxon Switzerland, a realm full of fantastical rock plateaus and mystery.
