7 Bernkastel-Kues

On a serpentine bend in the river,

among woods and vineyards, the

twin-towns of Bernkastel-Kues have

the per fect Mosel set ting. They have

many amaz ingly crooked houses,

some of which house wine taverns,

specializ ing in the local Bernkasteler

Doctor. Bernkastel clusters behind

the Pfarrkirche St. Michael, once part

of the town’s defenses. The Marktplatz

is surrounded by half-timbered

An alley from the Simeonstiftsplatz

parking lot leads to the colossal 2nd-

cen tury Porta Nigra 1 (open daily), the

last of Trier’s four city gates. Named

for its blackening, which had already

occur red by the Middle Ages, it is

remark able for its ingen ious design –

the structure is supp orted by just a

few iron rods. It was inhab ited by

a Greek hermit, Simeon, after 1028.

Turned into a church after his death

and sanctifi cation, it was dissolved

along with the adjoin ing monastery

by Napoleon in 1802. South of the

gate, Simeonstrasse leads to the

Hauptmarkt 2 , the hub of the old

town where the sculpted foun tain

grand houses includ ing the vivid red

Baroque Rotes Haus and the 15th-

cen tury Steipe, once a banquet ing

hall now housing Germany’s oldest

phar ma cy, the Löwenapotheke.

castle ruin with views of rolling

hillsides. From the Marktplatz, follow

Mandatstrasse to a 2-mile (3-km)

hiking trail to the castle, or take the

hourly shuttle bus (Apr–Oct: open daily)

from the river front tourist office.

on to the B53. In Trier, turn left on to

Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke and then right

on to Martinsufer to Friedrich-Ebert-

Allee to Nordallee. Turn right at

Simeonstiftsplatz to park on the left.
