The village of Siebeldingen lies on
the Queich river, which once formed
France’s northeast military frontier.
Among the village’s wine growers,
the Ökonomierat Rebholz (open
Mon–Fri; http://www.oekonomierat-rebholz.de)
is the most distinguished, producing
Grosses Gewächs wines – the German
equivalent of the French premier cru.
ª Follow the Deutsche Weinstrasse
beyond Frankweiler and continue via
Burrweiler to Hainfeld. Watch out for
the sharp left turn in Hainfeld. Villa
Ludwigshöhe is west of Edenkoben
along Villastrasse.

8 Edenkoben

Edenkoben was Bavarian territory
from 1816 until 1945. On the outskirts
of the town, Bavarian King Ludwig I
built his residence, Villa Ludwigshöhe^
(Jan–Nov: closed Mon), which was
designed by Friedrich Wilhelm von
Gärtner in the style of a Roman villa.
It was built between 1846 and 1852

9 Maikammer

With seemingly every second building
a Weingut (winery), Maikammer is a
Weinstrasse village par excellence.
Grandiose 19th-cen tury premises line
the route from the village to its railway
station; one of the finest buildings is
home to Weingut August Ziegler
(open Mon–Sat; http://www.august-ziegler.de),
which has thrice been declared
German Winemaker of the Year.
Alongside Riesling and Pinot Noir, the
estate also produces varieties of wine
quite unusual for Germany, including
Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc.
ª St. Martin is marked from
Maikammer along the side road.

Where to Stay: inexpensive, under €70; moderate, €70–€150; expensive, over €150

on an idyllic site between woods
and vine yards and contains a gallery
devoted to the German Impressionist
painter Max Slevogt. It is also the
venue for cham ber music concerts

Weinstrasse, continuing north
through Edenkoben to Maikammer.
