Dettelbach is another handsome
village behind intact defensive
walls. Tucked between the medieval
Rathaus and the eccentric-looking
parish church is KuK (open daily),
a modern cultural center where
visitors can sample local wines and
learn about Dettelbach’s religious
tradition. The pilgrimage church
of Maria im Sand lies east of the
village center. Visitors should not
leave Dettelbach without sampling
the delicious local Muskazinen –
hard-baked biscuits similar to
Italian biscotti.
ª Follow the road leading southward
along the Main to Kitzingen. In
Kitzingen, follow signs for Ochsenfurt,
then after the railroad bridge for
Sulzfeld and Marktbreit.

Prize-winning interpretations of
traditional Franconian cuisine are
served in the abbey’s 18th-century
guesthouse. The large beer garden
is a good place to try the Klosterbier

Zum Goldenen Adler moderate
Fish, game, and lighter fare,
including vegetarian options, grace
the menu of this pleasant restaurant
in Prichsenstadt’s tiny old town.

wines from Prichsenstadt’s
own winemakers.

VOLKACH
Sachs expensive
This gourmet restaurant occupies part
of one of Volkach’s finest houses, the
17th-century Echterhof, now an
elegant hotel. Chef Ralf Sachs’s
inventive, aromatic creations include
the likes of deer’s liver in cinnamon
butter and veal fillet with hazelnut
and herb crust.

Café Kehl inexpensive
One of the nicest places to try
Dettelbach’s famous fat-free cookies,
Muskazinen, the Café Kehl is a snug
and rustic café that serves good coffee
and cakes.

The Mainschleife
The Mainschleife is a loop-like
meander of the Main river east
of Würzburg at a point where
the landscape has a particularly
gentle beauty, framed by low,
vine-covered hillsides and dotted
with attractive small villages. The
popular local explanation for the
Main river’s eccentric course at this
point is that it is here the river feels
most at home. One excel lent way
to enjoy the area’s beauty is by
bicycle (Fahrradverleih “Gazelle,” Am
Bach 1; 09381 71 57 31) on the
annual car-free Sunday in early May.

The picturesque wine-growing
village of Sulzfeld boasts a remark ably
complete medieval town wall dating
from the 15th and 16th centuries. With
21 towers, it creates a convincing
impression of a child’s toy fort brought
north west of Volkach, this church
has a Madonna by the Würzburg
sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider.
ª Follow Brückenstrasse to
reach the bridge over the Main,
then turn left after the bridge, on to
Escherndorfer Strasse to reach the
village of Dettelbach.

other main claim to fame is as the
birthplace of the Meterbratwurst –
a giant sausage sold by length
(half-meter or meter).
ª Take the An der Staatsstrasse,
which becomes Sulzfelder Strasse
to Segnitz, where a sign for a left
turn brings drivers to the bridge
to Marktbreit.
