Aschaffenburg is dominated by the
Renaissance Schloss Johannisburg
(Apr–Sept: open daily, Oct–Mar: closed
Mon), built for the Mainz Prince-
Bishops between 1605 and 1614.
Inside, visitors can see the princely
apartments and admire a selection
of Old Masters as well as the world’s
largest collection of cork architec tural
models. Overlooking the Main
nearby is the Pompejanum (Apr–Oct:
closed Mon), a recreation of a Roman
villa built for the Bavarian King
Ludwig I between 1840 and 1848.

Wertheim has a pretty Altstadt on a
wedge of land at the confluence of
the Tauber and Main rivers. The town
is overlooked by Burg Wertheim (open
daily), a castle that has been a ruin
since the Thirty Years’ War. Today,
Wertheim is known above all for its
shops, in particular at Wertheim
Village (open Mon–Sat), a shopping
center just east of town.

Miltenberg am Main stands on a
tight bend in the Main river and
until 1803, was part of the territories
of the Mainz Prince-Bishops. The
focal point of the Altstadt here
is the Marktplatz (market place),
fringed by half-tim bered houses
and with a Renaissance fountain,
the Marktbrunnen, which dates
from 1583. The statue in the center
depicts Justice.

Bayreuth and Bamberg make great
bases for day trips around the region.
Architectural wonders
In Bamberg 6 , admire the
frescoes on the old town hall and
the Baroque architecture on a visit to
Vierzehnheiligen 7 , and its magnifi-
cent pilgrimage church designed by
Balthasar Neumann. Then head for
Schloss Weissenstein 8 , the
ancestral home of the Schönborn
family, who provided the region
with many of its Prince-Bishops.
Head north to Vierzehnheiligen on the
B4, returning to Bamberg to take the
B22 toward Pommersfelden.
Wine and dine
Discover the scenic wine-growing
country around Würzburg y with a
day trip to the Mainschleife. Start at
Prichsenstadt 0 before lunch and
a winery visit at Volkach q, then
continue south to Dettelbach w^
to sample the delicious Muskazinen
cookies. Return to Würzburg for a
leisurely dinner in one of the city’s
old traditional restaurants.
Head east to Prichsenstadt along the
A3, continuing to Volkach, then south
along the Main to Dettelbach. Return
to Würzburg on the B22 and B8.

Klingenberg lies at the foot of steep
slopes on the Fränkische Rotwein
Wanderweg, a footpath through the
red wine country of Lower Franconia
(Unterfranken). In summer, the ruin
of the castle of Clingenburg high
above the village is the venue for
the Clingenburg Festspiele (www.
clingenburg-festspiele.de). The festival
features open-air operas and plays.

Brückenstrasse to reach Klingenberg.
