Germany’s northernmost town,
Flensburg was an important trading
center in the 16th century. The
town’s trademark north ern gate,
the Nordertor, dates from 1595.
Visitors can explore the fascinat ing
Schiffahrtsmuseum (closed Mon)
or maritime museum. The town is
home to four outstanding churches
- the Marienkirche features a
Renaissance altar; nearby Heilig-
Geist-Kirche, or Church of the Holy
Ghost, belongs to the town’s Danish
community; the Nikolaikirche houses
an amaz ing Renaissance organ and
the Johanniskirche has a superb

Head to Flensburg 9 to tour its
maritime museum, then continue
on to Sylt 0 to laze on its sandy
beaches before heading to one of
the upmarket restaurants for dinner.
Continue on the B199 to Niebüll. Take
the Niebüll-Westerland car-train to Sylt.
Culture and landscape
Visit Lübeck 4 to admire its rich
architectural heritage. Next, stop
at Fehmarn 5 to enjoy the spec-
tacular views of the coast before
relaxing at one of the town’s several
wellness spas.
Take the A1 and then the B501 to
Heiligenhafen, then the B207 to Fehmarn.

The North Frisian Islands lie
scattered in the North Sea 4 miles
(6 km) off Schleswig-Holstein.
Sylt, the largest island, is 25-mile
(40-km) long. Known for its posh

include sandy beaches, red cliffs,
and the “Watt,” the expanse of mud-
flats in Nationalpark Schleswig-
Holsteinisches Wattenmeer. Relax

Westerland, the main town. Stroll
down Friedrichstrasse to a sea food

A medieval seaport with a colorful
North Sea harbor, Husum has a
delight ful old town. The town’s central
market square is filled with charming
17th- and 18th-cen tury buildings.
Husum was home to the German
poet and writer Theodor Storm
(1817–88), whose residence Theodor
Storm Haus (Apr–Oct: open daily; Nov–
Mar: open Tue, Thu, Sat) now houses a
small museum that displays exhi bits
related to the author’s life.
Also visit the Dom (open daily), which
displays the Bordesholmer altar, a
master piece of Gothic carving. Stroll
around the fishermen’s district of
Holm and visit the Viking Museum
Haithabu (Apr–Oct: open daily; Nov–Mar:
closed Mon), which sheds light on the
days when the Vikings used Schleswig
as their head quarters.

Bundesstrasse and then Schleswiger
Strasse to Flensburg.
