A 90-minute walking tour

Take Bergstrasse from behind the

parking lot to reach the cobbled

Markt 1. A show piece of restoration

work, this is one of the larg est market

squares in north Germany. To the

north of the square is the Neo-

Classical Rathaus, which houses a

museum (open daily) in its cellar with

displays on the town’s history. Cross

the main shopping street, Hegede,

behind the tourist office, to reach the

town’s Gothic quarter. Only an arch-

deacon’s house on the corner of

Sargmacherstrasse and the massive

tower of Marienkirche 2 remain from

before the Allied bomb ing raids in

1945. Take a tour up the 262-ft (80-m)
      tower (open daily), which has dis plays
      on medieval con struction tech niques.

A provincial town on the Baltic Sea, Wismar is worth a visit for its faded

grandeur and historic charm. Renovation has repaired the damage

wreaked by World War II to restore some thing of the looks of the

town’s golden ages. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2002.
