Start/finish: Burg Falkenstein to
Rammelsberger Bergbaumuseum.
Number of days: 2–3 days, allowing
half a day to explore Goslar.
Distance: 86 miles (139 km).
Road conditions: Well paved, though
many roads through the mountains
tend to be steep and winding.
When to go: It is possible to visit year
round, but minor roads are occasionally
snowbound from December to March.
Winter is best for skiing and sledding.
Opening times: Most attractions
open daily, while shops open from
9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, but
close earlier on Saturday. Most
shops and services are closed
on Sunday. Restaurants generally
close around 10pm.
Main market days: Quedlinburg:
Wed; Goslar: Tue & Fri.
Shopping: Look out for wood carvings
such as marionettes of witches or
cuckoo clocks at Harzer Uhrenfabrik.
Local crafts are available at Goslar’s
Kunsthandwerkermarkt.
Major festivals: Quedlinburg:
Musiksommer (classical music festival),
Jun–Sept; The Brocken: Walpurgisnacht
(witches’ night), Apr 30.
DAY TRIP OPTIONS
Using Quedlinburg as a base, nature
enthusiasts can spend a day hiking
in the southern Harz, then ride on the
steam train up the Brocken. Those inter-
ested in history can explore Goslar’s
half-timbered old town before returni ng
on a scenic route via the Rübeland
