door is the Renaissance Hall,
which houses a massive
wood, marble and alabaster
chimney designed by the
Dutch architect Lanceloot
Blondeel. The tree-shaded
space on the northern side
of the Burg was the site of the
Cathedral of St Donation, des-
troyed by the French in 1799.

The intricately carved façade
of the Stadhuis was completed
in 1375, but the niche statues
are modern effigies of the
counts and countesses of
Flanders. Much of this building
is a triumph of restoration.
Inside, a staircase leads up to
the Gothic hall, a magnificent
parliamentary chamber built
around 1400. The ceiling has
lavish woodcarvings including
16 beautiful corbels bearing
representations of the seasons
and the elements. Around the
hall is a series of paintings,
completed in 1895, portraying
key events in the city’s history.

One of Europe’s most sacred
reliquaries is held at the Heilig
Bloed Basiliek (Basilica of
the Holy Blood). The basilica
is divided into two distinct
sections. The lower part,
the evocative 12th-century
St Basil’s chapel, has a plain
stone-pillared entrance and
arches. The upper chapel was
destroyed by the French in
the 1790s and rebuilt in the
19th century. Here, brightly
coloured decorations surround
a silver tabernacle from 1611

The Vismarkt
Braambergstraat. # Tue–Sat.
From the Burg, an attractive
arched path called the Blinde
Ezelstraat (Alley of the Blind
Donkey) leads to this open-
air fish market with its elegant
18th-century colonnades. Fish
is still sold here each morning.

which houses a sacred phial,
supposed to contain a few
drops of blood and water
washed from the body of
Christ by Joseph of Arimathea.
The phial was brought here
from Jerusalem in 1150 and
is still the object of great ven-
eration. The church also has
a tiny museum of paintings,
vestments and other artifacts.
