EASTERN WALLONIA 225
One of the key rivers of the Ardennes, the Amblève
carves a picturesque path through hills and forests.
Walks here lead off along the river’s edge or to the
woodland waterfalls of the tributaries. Quarries and
a railway line are seen early on, but after Aywaille,
a busy centre for summer visitors, the landscape
becomes wilder and the road hugs the river, giving
access to picnic sites on the banks. It then rises to
villages such as Stoumont, which offer fine views
over the valley. The famous waterfalls at Coo are
an impressive note on which to end the drive.
A Tour of the Amblève u
Comblain-au-Pont 1
South of the Amblève’s scenic confluence
with the River Ourthe are strange sculp-
tures formed by hard dolomitic rock that
has resisted erosion. Equally sculptural
stalactites can be seen in Comblain’s
Découvertes Mystères limestone caves.
