(Romina) #1

Bonnet (Acholi?).
Uganda.
Human hair, beads, width: 33 cm.
Museum für Völkerkunde, Leipzig.

Identified as of “Schuli” (Acholi) origin, this is an example of what the men of
the cattle-keeping communities in Uganda, southern Sudan, and north-western
Kenya historically adopted for their series of elaborate coiffures used during the
initiation into the senior age grades associated with warriorhood. Most often,
the hair is piled, built-up with mud, painted, and then set with feathers. The
creation of a large basin-shaped hairstyle decorated with discs of coloured
beads is an alternative to this hairstyle.
