African Art

(Romina) #1

Mask (Lulua).
Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Wood, height: 28 cm.
Private collection.

Used during male circumcision ceremonies and rites of passage, this type of
mask brings back the spirits of dead people. This specimen shows well how the
Chokwe could reuse masks in initiation rituals, Mukanda, shared by several
populations from the south-west of Central Africa.
