African Art

(Romina) #1

Eyema Byeri statue (Fang).
Gabon.
Wood, black patina, copper, height: 57 cm.
ABG Collection.

As we know, Fang art has produced heads and ancestral figures
meant to watch the familial relics. From a stylistic point of view,
matches exist between these artefacts, in particular in the Mekè-
Betsi from Gabon (area of the Cristal mountains and the Como
valley): we notice similarities between the plaited head of the
Albert Barnes foundation, Paul Guillaume collection, and this
one. In addition, we notice here the particular gesture of the
offering-bowl handler, from the famous byeri of the previous
Pierre Guerre collection.
