installedin NewYorkCity’sLIGHTGallery.They
werea starkcontrasttotheusualblack&
whitearchivalprintsthatweregenerally
presentedasartphotographyat thetime.
Unfavourablereviewsfollowed,butdespite
that,theentirecollectionwasboughtby
curatorWestonNaefanddonatedtothe
MetropolitanMuseumof Art.
Sincethen,AmericanSurfaceshasbeen
exhibitedanddiscussedmanytimesacross
EuropeandtheUS.It is consideredbysometo
