Cheeky owl
does not
give a hoot
BARN owl Stardust
enjoys prey-time larks by
perching on the head of
collie-cross Fergus.
The pair are unlikely
friends, together with
beagle Sam.
The bond is so strong,
Stardust, two, frequently
lands on the dogs as
they sleep.
Claire Stafford, 40, and
her husband Paul, 45,
hand-reared her when
she was a chick.
The bird lives in an
aviary opposite their
home in Warrington,
Cheshire, but frequently
swoops across into the
house to see Sam, three,
and Fergus, six.
Nursery nurse Claire
said: “Barn owls aren’t
easy to look after and
beagles are quite
naughty – but for some
reason they all get on like
a house on fire.
“If we’re outside and
Stardust sees their tails
wagging she’ll fly down
and try and bite them.
“But when Stardust
was ill and had to have
syringe food, Sam licked
it off her face to clean her
up. I hope they grow old
together. It’s just so
lovely to see them
so happy.”

Thriller...Jackson wore the glove on final solo tour
Heal the world...mitt
was originally donated
A CRYSTAL-studded glove worn by to children’s charity
Michael Jackson on his final tour sold
for nearly £90,000 at auction.
Jacko donned the white spangled
mitt during his 1996-97 HIStory
series of gigs around the world.
A year later he donated it to Unicef,
the children’s fund of the UN.
The glove has a white snap on the
wrist and a label stitched inside
reading Dennis Tompkins & Michael
Bush – the megastar’s LA-based
costume designers.
The piece was auctioned for
$106,250 (£86,000) with a typed
letter to William Spencer of Unicef
from Jacko’s assistant Rosemary
Chavira, dated November 7, 1998.
It reads: “We are in receipt of your
letter dated October 28, 1998,
requesting an item from Mr Jackson.
Enclosed please find such an item.
“Custom-worn crystal glove used
during the 1996-1997 HIStory World
Tour. We thank you for including
Mr Jackson in your fundraising efforts
and wish you much success.”
Texan Heritage Auctions warned
the mitt was slightly soiled from
Jacko’s performances. The lot –
bought and sold anonymously –
included a 9in x 12in MJJ Productions
envelope dated 1995.

SOME 24 companies
supplying electricity in
the UK went bust last
year, a record number.
The cut-throat market
in recent years, with the
margins becoming razor-
thin, has been blamed
for many closures.
That also led to 17
such businesses disap-
pearing in 2018 with
five having gone to the
wall during the previous
12 months.
Wholesale costs of
electricity reached a
peak two years ago while
the energy price-cap has
additionally eaten into
profits.
And now firms are
forced to pay an annual
renewable power fee if
enough of the energy
they sell does not come
from green sources.
Paul Pittman, from
accountants Price Bailey
which obtained the data
via a freedom of infor-
mation request, said:
“There has been a lot of
focus on the retail end of
the supply chain but
whenever an energy
retailer goes bust there is
a knock-on effect down
the supply chain.
“The number of retail
energy suppliers going
bust is actually just the
tip of the iceberg.
“Businesses engaged
in the trade of electricity,
which are creditors to
retail energy suppliers,
are going to the wall in
record numbers.
“We are seeing a dom-
ino effect. Every time a
small energy retailer
does go bust, that
increases the financial
strain on the rest of the
supply chain, making
those businesses more
vulnerable to collapse.”
The biggest casualties
among the suppliers
have included Economy
Energy, Extra Energy,
Spark Energy and Toto
Energy.
