MAKE SURE BUSINESS IS

BOOMING IN YOUR HOME OFFICE

Found yourself working from your abode a lot recently? Here’s what
you need to upgrade your working from home setup

Working from home has never been so
popular, or so obligatory, as it has been in
recent months. If you’re able to set up a
‘proper’ office space, it can be a lot more
beneficial and motivating than using the
dining room table, or a deckchair on the
balcony – although if that’s all you have
space for, that’s also fine.
If you’re looking for a desk, we can
heartily recommend Viking’s ‘proper’
office-style ones. Prices start from under
£100 and, perhaps more importantly, sizing
starts from as little as 80cm across.
Those in search of something with a bit
more style but not hugely increased price
should consider Made.com. Again, they have
some excellent options for those seeking to
cram a desk into a small space. The Jory
(£249, made.com) blurs the lines between
shelving unit and desk – surely you can
make room for that?
One thing you cannot do with the Jory is
use it as a sit/stand desk. However, most
other desks and tables can be easily
converted by adding a Varidesk (from £275,

vari.com). The obvious benefit of working
standing up is that it means you don’t have
to splash out on an expensive office chair.
What may surprise you is that, far from
being a tiresome chore dreamed up by
health and safety zealots, working standing
up is genuinely beneficial in terms of
reduced back pain and greater alertness.
If you decide you prefer the good ol’
fashioned technique of sitting on your arse,
John Lewis has an excellent choice of
office-suitable chairs, from classic
ergonomic ones to chairs that can double as
dining chairs after the working day is done.
An underrated office essential is a good
quality task lamp. Using directed light is
better for your eyes than bright overhead
lighting, and a good lamp is also an
endlessly handy and enjoyable thing to own.
Our current favourite is the Humanscale
Nova (from £275, humanscale.com), which
looks like something from the most tasteful
room on the Starship Enterprise, and can be
used either on a stand, or clamped to your
desk. Now you’re in business.

SMEG CGF01
Now could be
a great time
to get more
serious about
your coffee
making. This
industro-
deco grinder
has easily
adjustable
settings –30
in total (!) – to
make fresh
coffee in all
styles, espresso to cafetiere.
£199, smeguk.com

KITCHENAID
ARTISAN K400
It may be
KitchenAid’s
most
affordable
blender but the
K400 does not
lack power. It’s
also achingly
stylish,
with a
dishwasher-
safe glass
jar and a
choice of
‘more colours than any other
blender on the market’ (by
which they mean 11).
£279, kitchenaid.co.uk

RUSSELL HOBBS
K65 ANNIVERSARY
A British design icon
celebrates its 65th
anniversary with not a
retirement party but a
revival. This once graced
kitchens throughout the land
and it still looks great. As well
as the classic stainless steel
finish, it also comes in a more
modern copper one.
£65, uk.russellhobbs.com
