Guidelines for Safety

Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain—and most fools
do.
—Dale Carnegie

Let’s assume that your group has one or more members who can
model safety. What guidelines do the experts use? Of course, these
experts are interested in safety for purposes different from ours,
such as productive meetings and personal growth. Nevertheless,
the guidelines apply to our interest as well: accessing creativity.
The Mankind Project hands out a list of “Rules and Guide-
lines” to every new group that is formed. They are as follows:

Rules:

  1. Take responsibility for yourself.

  2. Tell the truth.

  3. What you hear here and who you see here stays here. Re-
    spect the confidentiality of others.

Guidelines:

  1. Speak freely and openly. You need not ask permission to
speak, intervene, move around, or contribute in any fashion.
However, it is easier if only one person speaks at a time.
