ANNOTATED ROOM

A Perky Living Room Redo

A makeover of this 1906 Victorian home in San Francisco gave an old soul a new, younger vibe

T

he owners are a couple in
their early 40s—one works
in finance and the other
with a nonprofit—who have
two children under the age of 5. They
turned to Los Angeles-based designer
Melissa Warner Rothblum of Mas-
succo Warner Interior Design and
Decoration to oversee the project.
Making the living room vibrant
and fun involved removing the heavy
draperies, lightening the woodwork
and painting over mustard-colored
walls using a bold peacock blue, Ms.
Warner Rothblum says. The couple
wanted all new furnishings with a
blend of styles, and custom uphol-
stered pieces had to be both beautiful
and durable to withstand kids and
entertaining. “They didn’t want it to
be so precious that somebody
couldn’t sit down with a drink or if
they’re eating something,” she said.
The home’s makeover, including a
kitchen remodel, took about nine
months. The living room portion of
the project cost an estimated
$85,000, she says. Here are some of
the components in the room, with ap-
proximate prices.
