Mark O’Connell is a writer based in Dublin.

His first book, ‘‘To Be a Machine,’’ was awarded

the 2018 Wellcome Book Prize and the 2019

Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. He previously

wrote a feature article about a presidential

candidate running on a platform of eradicating

death. For this week’s issue, he writes about

tourism in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Russia.

The article is adapted from his forthcoming

book, ‘‘Notes From an Apocalypse,’’ which will be

published by Doubleday in April. ‘‘At the time

I traveled to the Zone, I was very preoccupied by

the apocalyptic feel of our culture, the sense

that we were living in the last days,’’ O’Connell

says. ‘‘I wanted to see what the end of the

world might look like.’’

Seth Casteel is a photographer and the author

of nine books, including “Underwater Dogs,’’

‘‘Underwater Puppies’’ and ‘‘Pounce.” He is also

the host of the TV series ‘‘Finding Fido.’’ He

lives in Nashville.

Jazmine Hughes is a story editor for the

magazine. She is one of the recipients of the

2020 ASME Next Awards, celebrating

journalists under 30. She previously wrote a

feature about generational consultants.

Heidi Julavits is the author of four novels and one

book of nonfiction, ‘‘The Folded Clock.’’ She last

wrote for the magazine about what she learned

in avalanche school.

Brooke Jarvis is a contributing writer for the

magazine. She last wrote a Screenland column

about hoax videos of disasters.

Christoph Niemann is an illustrator and

an author. His latest books include ‘‘Sunday

Sketching’’ and ‘‘Hopes and Dreams.’’

He last illustrated a dispatch about Brexit for

the magazine.

Kim Tingley is a contributing writer for the

magazine and the Studies Show columnist. Past

topics have included the potential health

impacts of mindfulness, sunscreen and diets.
