SONY WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS

E

ach year photographers across
the globe wait in anticipation to
see which images will be chosen
for the prestigious Sony World
Photography Awards shortlist. Showcasing
some of the world’s best photography, and
now in its 13th year, the competition has gone
from strength to strength, and is one of the
most important contests to enter and have
your work recognised.
This year, naturally, things are a little
different. Gone is the annual exhibition at
Somerset House, while the awards ceremony

  • due to take place in June – has also been
cancelled. It is hoped the exhibition will be
able to be shown at a later date.
Nevertheless, to date, the winners of the
Open category have been announced online,
while the professional category winners as
well as the overall title holders will be
announced, again online, on 9 June.

For anybody unfamiliar with how the Sony
contest works, the competition is divided into
the Open category, for anybody to enter, and
the Professional competition. There are also
Youth and Student competitions, plus special
prizes, including the Zeiss Photo Award and
the Alpha Female Award.
This year, more than 100 photographers
were shortlisted in the Open category, with
ten category winners. Each of the winners
wins imaging equipment from Sony, and will
go on to compete for the Open Photographer
of the Year title and a US$5,000 prize.
Across these pages, we present some of
those shortlisted and winning images as
selected by AP’s Features Editor, Amy Davies.
We hope you enjoy looking at these beautiful
shots – you can visit worldphoto.org for more
photographs, as well as further details of all
the shortlisted images and the latest
information regarding announcements.

This arresting shot captures the moment the four
cooling towers of Ironbridge Power Station in
Shropshire were demolished on 6 December

  1. These towers had stood as part of the

landscape for 50 years, but were destroyed as
part of a new development on the site. The picture
was taken from Alec’s garden, which is on the
hillside opposite the demolition site.
