The Well-Tended Perennial Garden The Essential Guide to Planting and Pruning Techniques, Third Edition

(Sean Pound) #1

AUTUMN & WINTER

Planting starts again in autumn as the cooler weather approaches. Pruning is the
major maintenance that continues in this season. It’s enjoyable to be in the
garden again—get your fill before winter sets in.

SEPTEMBER

September is the month to start getting back into planting. Enjoy all the
summer-flowering perennials that are reblooming in September because you
took the time to cut them back and/or deadhead them earlier in the season.

PlantinG

w Division and transplanting of spring- and summer-flowering perennials
is accomplished with ease as the days start to cool down. Try to finish
this by the end of the month so that plants can establish before winter.
w Move self-sown biennials as needed.
w Continue to order plants for autumn installations and planting.
w Bed preparation and planting can begin again.
w Peonies, poppies, and bearded iris (best planted by mid-September) are
available for planting now.

Autumn, my favorite season, is
such a welcome relief after a
busy spring and summer in the
garden. Enjoy the lush regrowth
and rebloom on the many
perennials you pruned earlier.
