frozen forests of Alta in -30°C, while the moon
was high above the incredible orange glow of
the setting sun. We quite literally froze with
icicles forming on our eyelashes, but it was worth
every second of defrosting to be out with the
huskies racing across the snow.
Must see: Experience the culture of the Sámi,
descendants of the nomadic people who have
inhabited Scandinavia for thousands of years. Sip
co ee in their lavvo tent, meet their reindeer herds,
listen to their joik (folk music) and learn about their
beautifully coloured, traditional clothing.
Top tip: Because there is so little natural light
in winter, having a decent camera and tripod is
essential, especially if you want to capture the
northern lights. I hire camera equipment online
(lenses,tripods,ilters)whentravelling,soIhave
the latest and best equipment.
Cautionary tale: Norway has some unusual meats
including moose and reindeer, so if you have an
objection to eating these, read the labels irst!
I wish I’d known: I knew that travelling to northern
Norway in December would mean witnessing the
winter solstice, but I did not fully appreciate just
how dark it would be. It was pitch black by 1pm.
Anything else: Stay at, or visit, one of the Igloo
Hotels and try rosé cider – it is divine.

SLIDING DOORS
“I was in Hungary at around
midnight and on my way
back to my hotel with
a friend. My friend got o the
train ahead of me and before
I had the chance to get o ,
the doors slammed closed.
Alone, in an unfamiliar part
of a foreign country at night,
with no trains going back to
my original stop for at least
two hours. It was scary,
but also an adventure.”

LOST IN
TRAINSLATION
“I was almost thrown o
a train in Eastern Europe
when I couldn’t understand
that the train conductor just
wanted to see my passport!”

NO MORE TRAINS
“Friends and I planned to get
the train from Niagara to
Toronto only to be told when
we arrived at the station that
the trains had stoppedfor
the season and only
run once a day at
5.30am. We
managed to get a
bus, but now
whenever we trave
my friends take
charge of the traintravel.”
