on the road to hand him his gong.

Spending a day at the airport is
We’ll take Olivia Lee’s word for it – fun?

things
we learnt
this month...

1

Black, clumsy and
hostile... Darwin
called marine iguanas
‘imps of darkness’, but
forget about their ugly
rep – they can shrink their
skeletons by 20%. Talk
about survival of the
“ittest! (p29)

2

Southampton
airport has
recruited a “canine
crew”, giving man’s best
friend a brand-new job
soothing nervous “lyers.
Paw-fect! (p77)

3

Looking for animal
magic? Meet
Finland’s “spirit”
bears who prove that
blondes really do have
more fun. (p113)

4

Tuck into a work
of art or, if you’re
Japanese,
a bento. Who knew
lunch boxes could be
so pretty? (p40)

It was a pleasure to meet so many of you
at the recent travel shows, and to ind out
where you had been – and loved – over
the past year. Equally, I always feel a thrill
of anticipation at the results of our
Travel Awards (p62) to see how you
have rated your travels. Some winners
are almost reassuringly predictable – will Singapore Changi
ever be usurped as your Top Airport? With it continuing to
develop new o erings, we sent our intrepid reporter to spend
a day there (p151).
We keep a sharp eye on what you are reading on the
Wanderlust website too. While there was a clear favourite
destination (p70), it was noticeable that Sri Lanka had really
picked up again in popularity, so we hope you enjoy our
Trip Planner (p84).
As I write this, the sky outside is a brooding grey, and sleet is
lashing the window. The world news is also gloomy with a certain
“C” word dominating, and we have no idea how that is going to
a ect travel plans. But whatever the next few weeks bring, I hope
you enjoy a dose of joy and sunshine with this magazine.
