most fulfilling chapter:mother and grand-
mother,where her extraordinary goodness,
compassion, brilliance,and wry humor was
always on display.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
her husband, andabeloved cousin, Robert
Pehlivanian, who was likeabrother to her.
She is survived by her son Dr.Arshavir
Blackwell ofWest Hollywood, CA; her daugh-
ter Elizabeth Blackwell Poston (Britt) of Flo-
rence,SC; and her daughter Pinky Blackwell
Verma (Richard) of Bethesda, MD.She is
also survived by cousins,again as precious
to her as siblingsVasken (Karen) Minassian
of Bradenton, FL, John (Joanne) Pehlivanian
of Bay Head, NJ,and Christine (Dr.Robert)
Shamsey,ofSarasota, FL. Additionally,and
to her the most treasured, she is survived
by her five grandchildren, whom she adored,
and nurtured so well, and who in turn adored
her,Colby and Cooper Poston and Zoe,Lucy,
and DylanVerma.
In lieu of flowers,the family suggests dona-
tions to the Armenian General Benevolent
Union (AGBU), or to an animal charity of
one’schoice to honor her lifelong love of
animals.The family would like to express
their gratitude for the dedicated and loving
care provided by her health care assistants,
Jeanette and Amanda, who helped her main-
tainawonderful quality of life for many years.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30p.m.,
Friday,March 6, 2020 at HighlandPark United
Methodist Church with burial to follow in
Florence National Cemetery,directed by
Waters-Powell Funeral Home.

Sonia Shiragian Blackwell passed away at
McLeod Hospice House on March 3, 2020,
with her loving family by her side.
She was born in NewYork, NY onFebruary
22, 1928, the daughter of Kayane Ghazarian
Shiragian and Arshavir Shiragian. She grew
up asafirst-generation Armenian immigrant
inWashington Heights,before it became
famous as “The Heights.”She enjoyed an
idyllic childhood, roaming her beloved Upper
Manhattan with cousins and friends,explor-
ingFortTr yonPark and the Cloisters,roller
skating everywhere,including to the corner
store foranickel ice cream treat. After
graduating from The Barnard School for Girls
and earning the first place “Latin Prize” for
excellence in Latin in the entire NewYork City
school system, she attended Smith College,
and graduated in 1949 withabachelor’s
degree in philosophy.Her vocational passion
was writing, and she worked for The Bergen
Record (NJ) newspaper for several years
after college,where she was nominated for
aPulitzer Prize.She always downplayed the
nomination, stating plainly that “everyone is
nominated.”She also worked as an Armen-
ian language translator at the United Nations
and publishedashort story in The New
Yorker magazine about being Armenian in
America.
She helped her father,Arshavir Shiragian,
write and translate his memoirs,The Legacy,
about his role in avenging the Armenian
Genocide,which was published in 1976. In
the early 1960s,she moved toWashington,
DC to work with the senator from New
Jersey.There she met and marriedFrederick
Blackwell, her loving husband of 53 years,

awardedaPurple Heart and the Distin-
guished Flying Cross for his service.After the
war,heattended the University of Maryland,
where he met his wife Marilyn Scuderi.
Before he and Marilyn were formally intro-
duced, Pete memorably told his friend that
he would “marry this girl”. They married in
1949 for 65 years until her passing in 2014.
Pete beganajournalism career withWash-
ington Evening Star newspaper,worked his
way to news editor and wasamember of
the White House Press Corp.When the
family grew to seven (7) children in the
50’s,he switched careers to the wholesale
beer industry and started Bozick Distributors
in 1959. This company still operates with
much success under the leadership of sons
Brian and Joseph and grandsons Eric and
Alex. Pete engaged in public service in 1965
asaCommissioner ofWashington Suburban
Sanitary Commission (WSSC). He became
WSSC Chairman in 1970.From 1971 to 1982,
Pete served asaMDState Senator from
Prince Georges Co., alongside Hon. Steny
Hoyer and Hon. Sen Mike Miller.Among
his accomplishments,Pete helped in the
formation of the Chesapeake Bay Commis-
sion which led tothe founding the Chesa-
peake Bay Program in 1983. He was a
member of theMarylandRacing Commission,
and many other civic organizations.
His proudest accomplishment was his mar-
riage and loving familywhere he leaves
behind many descendants,including his chil-
dren, their spouses,grandchildren and great
grandchildren. They include Marie (Philip)
Fulton, La Grange,IL; Peter (Chris)Bozick,
Jr,Salisbury; Claudia (Keith)Voigt, Ellicott
City; Brian (Pam)Bozick,Waldorf; Anne
(Mark) Dzurnak, Morgantown, WV;Daniel
(Janet) Bozick, Boca Raton, FL; and Joseph
(Cheryl Lincoln) Bozick, Salisbury.Healso
leaves behind 24grandchildren and 21great-
grandchildren.Pete and Marilyn sharedalove
of Christ and were active in church as lector
and vocalist to nameafew of their many
roles.They were deeply committed to the
Covenant Community of Jesus the Good
Shepard Catholic Church in Calvert County.
Pete took great pleasure in attending the
Weekly Men’sBible Group at St. Peter’s
Church.
AMass of Christian burial will be held Satur-
day,March 14, at 11a.m. at St.Francis de
Sales Catholic Church.Avisitation will be

PETER ANTHONY BOZICK, SR.
Peter Anthony Bozick, Sr,age 94, died peace-
fullyFebruary 24, 2020 in Salisbury due to a
fall the week before.Hewas graciously cared
for by PRMC,Atria, and Coastal Hospice with
his loving family by his side.
Family members remember Pete’sintellect,
generosity,independent thinking, joke
telling, and love of Christ andFamily.It
wasrare to go somewhere where Pete
did not run into someone he knew.He
would often speak in foreign languages,
recite Shakespeare,famous poems,and sing
tunes from long ago.Many years in business,
community groups,politics,family,and
church provided Pete withalarge network
of friends and loved ones.Two of his
often-used mottos were: “When the going
gets tough...the tough get going,”and the
indelicate,“Don’t let the bas----dsget you
down.”
Pete,aself-made man, overcame personal
obstacles to leadasuccessful life inbusines-
sand politics; in addition to his most beloved
role asapatriarch who helpedraisealarge
loving family.Pete,anonly child, was born
on March 14, 1925, to Croatian immigrant
parents at their apartment on 42nd St in
Hell’sKitchen, NYC.His father,Barisa Bozi,
deserted the family shortly thereafter.His
18-year-old mother,Mary (MaricaBozivich)
Bozi, could not speak English. At age 2,
he contracted polio and was hospitalized
for 18 months.Pete moved to Baltimore
with his mother in 1933. He was an avid
reader from an early age,largely self-taught,
excelled in school and skipped two grade
levels before high school. He graduated
fromTowson High School, while taking a
night class at John Hopkins University.Being
proficient in multiple languages,Pete enlist-
ed during WWII and was placed into the
Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and
trainedasaspy.Hewas captured by the
Nazis in the formerYugoslavia and rescued
shortly thereafter by British forces.Hewas

da, Maryland at the age of 101. Rita is
survived by her three children: JoAnne Arzt
(Pete Martinez) ofWashington, DC,and

Frederick (Madeleine) of Burke,VA, and
their two daughters and three grandchil-
dren; and, William (Susan) of Bethesda,
MD,andtheirsevenchildrenandthree
grandchildren. Rita was born in Brooklyn,
NewYork on October 1, 1918 to William
and BridgetFoy.Her sister,Catherine Corr,
and brothers,William and EdwardFoy,
predeceased her.She received her nursing
degree from Jersey City Hospital and
worked asaregistered nurse in NewYork
City before joining theU.S.Public Health
Service duringWorldWarIIand serving
as an Assistant Nurse Officer with the
Coast Guard. She attained therank ofLT (JG)
andwasassignedtopostsinBaltimore,
Maryland; the Coast Guard Academy,New
London, Connecticut; andWashington, DC.

    Guard LCDRFrederick Karl Arzt. Theyraised
    their family inWashington and NewYork.
    Following the retired-Captain Arzt’sdeath
    in 1977, she relocated to theWashington
    area to be closer to family.Rita was a
    dedicated and supportive mother,grand-
    mother,and great-grandmother.She was
    avoracious consumer of news,and she
    particularly loved newspapers-especially
    those from NewYork.Asavvy investor,she
    greatly enjoyed following the stock market
    well into her 90s.Alife-long learner,she
    went back to college at night while her
    children were in high school, earning a
    degree in 1965 from then-C.W.Post College.
    Rita will be buried on March 5, 2020 in
    Arlington National Cemetery.There will be
    aMass at 12:45p.m. at theFort Myer
    Memorial Chapel on Joint Base Myer-Hen-
    derson Hall, followed byagraveside service
    with military honors at Arlington National
    Cemetery.Please note that new entry

Don was born May 30, 1930, to John and
HildaFarrell. In addition to his parents,
Don was predeceased by his brother,John
Farrell Jr.(Jeanne). Don is survived by his
loving wife of 56 years Betty,sisterPatricia
Marinelli, daughters Monica (Boris), Donna
(Michael), Ellen (Robert) and son Michael
(Andrea), ten grandchildren, beloved sisters
and brothers-in-law,nieces,nephews and

Don served in the United States Army
during theKoreanWarbefore returning
home to run the family steel business.
He earned his law degree from SUNY Buffa-
lo.Hebegan his law career with theFederal
Reserve and later joined the Small Business
Administration where he worked for 20
years,retiring as Associate General Counsel
for the Office of Intra-Agency Affairs.In
addition, he hadaprivate tax law practice
and served as an Adjunct Professor for the
Federal Executive Institute and an Adminis-
trative Law judge for the State Department.

Joanne Buenzli Crane died from brain can-
cer,athome where she wanted to be,
on March 4, 2020. She wasawhip-
smart lady withasense of humor and
tenacity,and wasatrailblazer for women
and mothers working for the government.
She was born in 1976 in Lancaster,PA, the
daughter of Charles and Mary Kay Buenzli.
She graduated from North Allegheny High
School inWexford,PAin 1994, and from
GeorgeWashington University in 1998, Phi
Beta Kappa, withamajor in International
Affairs,Honors Program, andaminor in
International Economics.She married Tim-
othyJacob Crane in 2004. Besides Tim, her
family included two daughters,Grace and
Julia, who were her joys.Agourmet cook,
she could make an amazing meal simply
by opening the pantry and refrigerator after
just arriving home from the office.Joanne
served8years as CFO for the Economics
and Statistics Administration, followed by
two years as acting CFO and the Budget
Director at NOAA. Forthe most recent
six years,Joanne served as the CFO of
the Census Bureau. She wasarecipient
of the Silver and Bronze Medal awards
for MeritoriousFederal Service,and was
recognized by her employees asamanager
who changed the culture of her organiza-
tion into one where people felt respected
and appreciated. She volunteered at the
DC Rape Crisis Center and for the Girl
Scouts of America. Her father predeceased
her.Left to carry on her passions are
her mother,Mary Kay Buenzli; her sister,
Theresa Buenzli Costanzo (Joseph) of Muk-
ilteo,WA; her in-laws,Jay and Mary Ann
Crane of Hickory,NC; her brother-in-law,
TedCrane (Peggy) of Malvern,PA;her sister-
in-law,Nancy Crane Mullally (Matthew) of
Woburn, MA; and numerous beloved aunts,
uncles,nephews and nieces.She also had
countless mutually-devoted neighbors,co-

March 1, 2020, at Carteret Landing in More-
head City,NC.
Mary Ruth was born on September 24, 1923
in Ewing, Virginia. She spent her earlier years
onaworking farm inTazewell, TN,with her
many aunts and uncles.She went to Radford
University in Radford,VA,and the University
ofTennessee in Knoxville,TN.Upon graduation
from college,Mary Ruth moved to Baltimore,
where she met her future husband, Robert
Russell Jones.
In 1951, they adopted their daughter,Mary
Elizabeth "Liz" and, in 1952, adopted their son,
John Russell. In 1954, Mary Ruth and Robert
designed and built their home in Bethesda,
MD,where they lived until they relocated to
Winchester,VA, in 2004.
Mary Ruth was preceded in death by her
parents; her son, John; and, Robert, her hus-
band of 74 years.She is survived by her loving
daughter,Liz Jones-Dern (Bob), granddaughter,
Liana McNutt (Brad), and two great grand-
daughters,Hannah and Sammie McNutt. Also
surviving Mary Ruth is her older sister,Eliza-
beth Overton, three nieces,and one nephew.

On March 2, 2020. Diane grew up in Cheverly
MD,graduated from Regina High School,
Catholic University of America and earned
her Master's degree from the University of
Maryland. She was proud to have been a
Peace Corp volunteer,she served in Nigeria
in the late 60s.She began her career with
USAID stationed in Egypt, her favorite posting.
She received her commission into the US
Foreign Service from President Bill Clinton. In
her younger days Diane wasacamp counselor
atValley Mill camp and enjoyed kayaking,
scuba diving and synchronized swimming.
She was preceded in death by her parents
Miriam E. Leach and Melvin H. Leach Sr.; her
siblings Melvin H. Leach Jr.(and sister-in-law
Gloria), Denise E. Stephenson, and ElaineG.
Leach. She leaves to mourn her passing her
