ment is sometimes made that by

placing their names on an institu-

tion, wealthy donors encourage

their peers to be generous as well.

That may be true for people who

give smaller donations, who want

to give because they want to be

visibly part of a community of

passionate supporters. But when

it comes to big donors, the argu-

ment is s elf-serving and it makes a

mockery of the proper well

springs of philanthropy.

If you want t o understand g enu-

ine philanthropy, flip through the

program book t o the donors’ page,

or look f or the p laque o n the m use-

whose life may not be exemplary.

And how many lives are exempla-

ry? few if any of our founding

fathers, it would seem. Even our

current heroes may be held t o new

standards that will embarrass us

in the future. Better to name

things f or the i nstitution itself, the

only the credibility of the institu-

tion itself.

The U.S. government offers a

pittance when it comes t o support-

ing the arts, so perhaps it is neces-

sary for cultural groups to sell off

every auditorium, every renovat-

ed gallery, every addition. And it

may well be true that some of the

strength of the American arts

most always utterly meaningless

to a cultural institution’s audi-

ence, and any vague name recog-

nition among people who buy op-

something is named, it puts the

institution in painful dialogue

with itself, often creating factions

and animosity among its leader-

ship and funders.

stitution or the donor? Domingo

program was founded, but the
