It All Back Home. During sessions for that
album and its 1965 companion, Highway
61 Revisited, Dylan tries out all sorts of
things on all of his instruments—piano
(below), harmonica, acoustic and electric
guitars—in ways he hadn’t earlier. Opposite:
In Woodstock, Sara Lownds watches films
with Dylan and his friend Victor Maymudes
in 1964. In this period she and Dylan are
becoming romantically involved, and the
next year she will become pregnant and
they will wed. Maymudes, who died in 2001,
was regarded on the scene as “the Village
philosopher” and something of a mentor to
Dylan; he served at various times through
the years as the singer’s tour manager.
