Evan Goldman
E
van Goldman is a fi gurative artist
based in Bethesda, Maryland. His
oil and acrylic paintings range from
realism to surrealism and are often
narrative. This April, Goldman will have
an exhibition of his art at Dacia Gallery
in New York City. This exhibit, titled Lost
in Dreams, will be the artist’s fi rst solo
show in New York.
“These paintings show my develop-
ment over the years,” says Goldman. “As
my paintings become more narrative,
I want the viewer to see a story behind
the painting.”
Goldman has a BFA in painting from
Maryland Institute College of Art and
an MFA in painting from the New York
Academy of Art. He also studied under
Odd Nerdrum, Robert Liberace and
David Gray. Additionally, Goldman
participated in the Takt Artist Residency
in Berlin, Germany.
Growing up in the suburbs of
Washington D.C., Goldman frequently
visited the National Gallery of Art where
he drew inspiration from the Dutch and
Flemish Old Masters such as Rembrandt,
Vermeer and Rubens. These classical
infl uences can be seen in his paintings,
many of which portray people in a dream-
like state with surreal fi gures fl oating
around them.
The largest piece in the show, Alice at
Wonderfest, alludes to the book Alice in
Wonderland that was about a dream. This
version, however, portrays the characters
as counter-culture revelers at a festival in
the woods.
Goldman’s exhibition Lost in Dreams
runs from April 4 to 10, with a reception
on opening night from 6 to 8 p.m.
