Toronto right-hander Matt Shoe-
maker had another impressive
spring training start, as the Blue
JaysbeatthePhiladelphiaPhillies
9-0 in Grapefruit League exhibi-
tion baseball action Sunday.
Shoemakerpitchedfourno-hit
innings, striking out four while
giving up just one walk. He has
yet to give up a run this spring af-
ter striking out five and giving up
just one hit in a 2^2 ⁄ 3 -inning start
March 2 against Pittsburgh.
Shoemaker’s 2019 season was
cut short after a promising start
when he tore his left ACL on April
20 in Oakland. The 33-year-old
was 3-0 with a 1.57 earned-run av-
erage before suffering the injury.

Baker each pitched an inning in
relief to combine with Shoe-
maker on a two-hit shutout.
Travis Shaw opened the scor-
ing for Toronto with a two-run
homer off Vince Velasquez in the

Bo Bichette increased Toron-
to’s lead to 3-0 with a solo shot off
Velasquez in the bottom of the
third.
The Jays doubled their lead
with a three-run fourth inning.
Jonathan Davis drove in two runs
with a double and then scored on
a single from Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
Toronto scored three more in
the eighth. Alejandro Kirk hit a
two-run homer and Santiago Es-
pinal scored on a Josh Palacios
ground-out.
The Blue Jays next take on the
Tampa Bay Rays on Monday af-
ternoon.
Toronto opens its regular sea-
son at home against the Red Sox
on March 26.

Sunday with a 26-19 win over
South Africa. New Zealand beat
Australia17-14inthefinal.Canada
advanced to the bronze-medal
game when it gave up a pair of
tries less than 30 seconds apart,
then was denied a last-minute
scoring chance in a 19-14 loss to
AustraliaduringSunday’ssemi-fi-
nal. With Canada threatening to
tie the match in extra time, Theo
Sauder was tackled at the goal
line.Aninstantreplayshowedthe
ball touched down just before
crossing the line. “I wish my arm
was one inch longer,” said the
Vancouver native. Canada and
Australia were tied 7-7 at half
time. The Australians went ahead
12-7 on a Henry Hutchinson try.
