and cardiac failure.
Mr.Ballman joined Grant Thornton CPAs (for-
merly Alexander Grant&Company) after
graduating from American University with a
BSBA in 1961 and an MBA asTeachingFellow
in Accounting inJanuary,1963. He founded
his accounting firm in 1980 upon retiring
asageneral partner of Grant Thornton and
continued to practice as an expert in taxation
and personal financial planning until his pass-

Health, Life andVariable Insurance licensed.

remembered. "They were doing the typing,
and they were sure thatImust be able to

examination, so they welcomed me.ButIgot

and then the next yearIwasastaff member."
Graduating from Georgetown Law at the top
of her class in 1954, Agnes was also the
first female winner of the Beaudry Moot
Court Competition for first year law students.
Following law school she joined what was
then the small law practice of Edward Ben-
nett Williams,who became the founding
partner of Williams&Connolly.Inthe early
years of the firm, she was on the defense
team of some colorful clients,including the
deportation case against notorious crime
bossFrank Costello.
When Mrs.Williams retired from the practice
of law toraise her family,she remained
close to Georgetown serving as trustee of the
university and later establishing The Williams
Professorships to recognize and support the
scholarly activities of Georgetown Law facul-
ty.The Georgetown Law Library was named
in honor of her late husband. In addition
to Georgetown University,Mrs.Williams was
amember of the Advisory Board at the
College of the Holy Cross,andaformer
trustee where she served as Vice Chair of
the board. Numerous endowed fellowships
at the College were made possible through
her generosity.
Mrs.Williams wasalong-time supporter of
the Democratic party causes,and women
Democratic candidates to the US Senate,in
particular,knew they could count on her help.

Edward Bennett Williams,died peacefully on
Wednesday,March 4, 2020 at her home
in Chevy Chase,Maryland. Mrs.Williams
was 89 and died from heart failure.She
wasadevoted wife,mother,sister,aunt,
grandmother,great-grand mother and friend.
Born andraised inWashington, DC,she was a
devoted Catholic.She attended Georgetown
Visitation Preparatory School where she later
served on the board of trustees.Mrs.Williams
wasagraduate of the College of the New
Rochelle,and later Georgetown Law.
Breaking down gender barriers,in1951 she
entered the first class to include women at
Georgetown University Law School. Becom-
ingatrail blazer in co-education, she once
admitted, wasn't her motivation in enrolling
at Georgetown Law.Infact, her decision
to apply came aboutrather accidentally.
Mrs.Williams was atafriend's wedding
whenaguest's date mentioned that the
Georgetown Law Center was opening itself
up to women for the first time.She had
already been accepted toamaster's program
at Georgetown, but her mother persuaded
her to apply to Georgetown Law and defer
admission to the other program. And off she
went.
Mrs.Williams recalled, "I arrived at the school
by bus," she said. "There wasabus stop at
the front door,and the entire sidewalk was
covered with returning male students.Ididn't
have the courage to get off the bus,soIrode
to the next stop.But you know? OnceIgot
there,Idid not feel intimidated at all.”
She was also the first woman on the staff
of The Georgetown Law Journal, though her
journey to get there wasatad roundabout.

“Clinical Heart Disease,”atext on cardiac
auscultation. He was an early member of
the “ROMEOS" as one of the “Legends” in
Georgetown Medical teaching.Upuntil the
time of his death, he was collaborating with
Col.Walter Brott, MD onabook chronicling
their travels exploring the History of Ancient
Western Medicine.

John was born on October 27, 1966 and his
large and loving heart stopped beating on
March 2, 2020.
John was preceded in death by his father
Gerard "Gerry" Schmelzer.Heissurvived by
his two sons,Nicholas and Michael Schmelzer
whom he loved more than words can say.Heis
also survived by his lovingand devoted mother,
Joan "Jody" Schmelzer of Silver Spring, MD;
sisters KarenJacobsen (Kerry) of Pittsburgh
PA,and KathleenBurke (Martin) of San Juan
Capistrano CA, nieces and nephews,Martin,
Colin, Katherine,Jack, Therese and Mark,Jared
HaanesOlsen(Maura);his“brother”andclos-
est friendaman can have,andahost of
cousinsand life-long friends
Also known as “dad, UncleJay, Jay-Bird,YoYo,
J-Man, and Johnny Boy,” John was deeply loved
by everyone who knew him. He grew up in
Silver Spring Maryland, and wasabeloved
memberofSt. John the EvangelistCommunity
where he attended grade school. After grad-
uating from Our Lady of Good Counsel High
School,John attended the University of Mary-
land where he majored in Finance.Hespent a
few years working for the Secret Service and
he worked forFreddie Mac for the past 21
years.
Johnwillberememberedforsomanythings.
First and foremost, he was the funniest person
anyone has ever met. He could tellastory
like no one else,and he could make you
laughevenwhenyoudidn’tfeellikelaughing.
He accomplishedthis by exaggerating, well,
almost everything! There was nothing he
would not do to help others.Hewas kind,
thoughtful, and generous.Hetruly cared about
every single person he met. He listened and he
loved. There are too many acts of kindnessto
mention, and many went unnoticed.
The family will receive friends at St. John
the Evangelist Church, 10103 GeorgiaAvenue,
Silver Spring, MD 20902,onSunday March 8
from6to8:30p.m. and Monday March9from
10 to 11 a.m. withamass of Christian burial
immediately following at 11 a.m. Interment will
be private.
