sect. It upholds the rules of its
member clans (though other sects
do exist and are at odds with it).
The chase in the trailer is
interspersed with scenes showing
some of the characters you meet
(like a friendly, free-with-blood
doctor), and plenty of hints at
vampire politicking, so you can expect
the uptight leaders of the Camarilla
to be back in full force in Bloodlines

“no-one’s hands stay clean”, and no
matter how you build your vampire
that will likely be the case. Try to
tread around the rules of the society
as much as you like, but you can’t
    expect vampires – especially the
elitist Ventrue clan – to play nice. It’s

Soulstorm isn’t

an odd one out

We loved the original,
and this remake looks
like doing it justice.

When it comes to
remakes we’re not
always used to
them being on the
level of Oddworld
Inhabitants’
do-over of their original PS1 game.
Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee was
remade as Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty,
which took the belovedoriginaland
made it feel totally,
well, new – all the
while sticking to
what fans were
familiar with.
Oddworld:
Soulstorm is the
follow-up, itself
riffing on the
original sequel,
Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus.Butthis
time things are getting even newer
and even tastier. “Soulstorm is a
brand-new game. I think some
people are perhaps expecting some
kind of remake but it’s definitely
much bigger than that,” Oddworld
Inhabitants’ Peter Chapman shared
with us last year.
So if Soulstorm is stepping away
from the Exoddus template, just

what will it be like? Utterly wonderful
visually is as much of an answer as
we have for now. The first-look
teaser trailer revealed as part of
Unity’s Games Developers’
Conference showcase shows just
how great games can look on the
latest version of the engine.
We get a glimpse of returning
characterAlfand newcomer Toby as
they desperately
flee pursuers in a
Comet Depot train.
They’re both
mudokons, a race
forced into slavery
to mine their
ancestors’ sacred
bones. All to
produce a drink
(Soulstorm)thecorporate suit-
wearing Glukkon Magog Cartel can
sell back to them. Grim. As they burn
the drink to power the train, they
realise, shocked, that it’s taking
them straight to the brewery. It’s all
imagery we’ve seen before, but
neverrealisedthisbeautifully.

IT’S IMAGERY
WE’VE SEEN
BEFORE, BUT
NEVER REALISED
LIKE THIS.

After Soulstorm what do you want next
from Oddworld? Let us know @OPM_UK.

ABE’S ADVENTURERS
In Exoddus, Oddworld hero Abe sets
out to save the Mudokon slaves with a
team who quickly become incapacitated
themselves. Here it looks like Alf and
the others will have much larger roles
as part of Abe’s new liberation quest.
