he boys are back in town and
look better than ever. Running
on Capcom’s RE Engine, this is
the ten-year-awaited return to
the main Devil May Cry series


  • and it’s a sequel that packs a
    supercharged punch. Not only
    is it the best DMC yet (and a
    perfect place to start), but it sets a high bar for
    the future of stylish action games.


Beginning in media res (look it up), the giant
Qliphoth tree from the underworld has risen
from beneath Red Grave City. A horde of demons
follows in its wake, harvesting torrents of
blood, on which the tree feeds, from humans. A
mysterious demon king, Urizen, awaits within,
gaining power from the crop of red stuff. In the
thrilling opening, Dante is defeated, with Nero
and new ally V only just managing to escape. The
game then picks up a month later as they return
for a rematch, and to find out what happened to
Dante. The story is a little bonkers, but pays off a
lot of lore in fun ways, though that’s unobtrusive
enough to still make sense to newcomers.

SINS IN THE CITY
For the most part you do a lot of fighting as you
make your way through the Totally Not London
‘Red Grave City.’ Success depends upon getting in
the zone and knowing when and how to draw on
your suite of moves. The way you utilise these
often depends on the situations your enemies
put you in, so it’s reactive to a degree. It’s not
dissimilar to how you would play a fighting game,
though the challenge isn’t to defeat another
player, but to use those movesets effectively
as you continue to focus on your destructive
character amid the chaos.
While it can be challenging, it never feels
unfair. You have the ability to weave sweet death
around your foes – as long as you time dodges
just right, use area-clearing attacks when you
get swarmed, and go on the offensive and pull
