MIAA DIVISION 4 BOYS’ BASKETBALL

It took Matt
Maguire some
time to find
his shooting stroke, but once he
did, Abington’s junior guard
did not miss again.
Maguire bounced back from
a cold-shooting first half by
making all nine of his shots in
the second, helping the Green
Wave pull away in the third
quarter and cruise to a 67-51
win over Snowden in a Division
4 state semifinal Tuesday at TD
Garden.
With the win, Abington
(22-5) advanced to Saturday’s
state final against Hopedale
(20-4), where the Green Wave
will look to avenge last year’s
55-52 defeat in the title game to
Worcester Tech.
“You got to get used to the
backdrop,” said Maguire, who
finished a game-high 25 points.
“But my coaches just told me to
keep shooting and stay confi-
dent and they ended up all fall-
ing in the second half.”
Abington led, 22-16, at half-
time, and then nearly duplicat-
ed its first-half point total in the
third quarter to take control.
Maguire, who was 2 for 10 in
the first half, netted 14 points
in the frame, connecting on a
pair of triples from each corner
for a 40-24 lead.
On the defensive end, Abing-
ton’s 1-2-2 zone gave Snowden
fits. The Green Wave forced 30
turnovers and used those steals
to get out and run in transition.
Guards Thomas Fanara, Colby
Augusta, and Antwone Graham
combined for seven steals, and
fed Maguire and 6-foot-8-inch
Cam Curney (13 points, 13 re-

bounds) often for easy layups.
As a result, Abington
opened up a commanding 20-
point lead in the fourth quarter.
“We went up and saw
Snowden on Friday and we
thought the zone was the best
way to beat them,” Abington
coach Peter Serino said. “We
don’t play a lot of zone but we’re
willing to do whatever it takes
to put us in the best position to
win.”
Junior guard Jarod McCla-
nahan led Snowden (18-5),

playing in the school’s first state
semifinal, with 13 points. Javier
Ellis, the team’s lone senior, fin-
ished with 5 points, 10 re-
bounds, and 3 blocks.
“Thirty turnovers and 13
missed free throws, that’s the
story of the game,” Snowden
coach Paul Rogers said. “But I
still love my team. I told my
guys I see Snowden on the jum-
botron and for me personally I
appreciate their efforts to get us
here. I hope that we come back
stronger next year.”

Northeastern bid falls short

By Elliott Smith
GLOBE CORRESPONDENT

NU 61

WASHINGTON
— Eight min-
utes away from
an unlikely NCAA Tournament
berth, the Northeastern bas-
ketball team held a 4-point
lead despite getting virtually
nothing from its leading scorer,
foul trouble, injury woes, and a
raft of turnovers.
You don’t win many games
like that, however, and eventu-
ally, those problems become
too much to overcome.
The sixth-seeded Huskies
ran out of gas and miracles in a
bitter 70-61 defeat to top-seed-
ed Hofstra in the Colonial Ath-
letic Association championship
game Tuesday at the Entertain-
ment & Sports Arena, denying
NU its second straight confer-
ence title.
“Unfortunately, we came up
about 20 minutes short,” Hus-
kies coach Bill Coen said. “It
was a very competitive game
overall and these guys played
their hearts out.”
The Huskies (17-16) held a
48-4 4 advantageattheeight-
minute media timeout after
leading by as many as 8 points
in the first half, but NU lost its
momentum and the lead in a

hurry, as back-to-back 3-point-
ers from Jalen Ray gave the
Pride a lead they would not re-
linquish.
NU had no answer for
Hofstra’s veteran leaders,
Desure Buie and Eli Pember-
ton, who combined for 39
points and several clutch bas-
kets as the Pride closed the
game out after the Huskies
trimmed the deficit to 54-52
with 4:57 left.
“They made big shot after
big shot,” Coen said. “You have
to tip your hat to them.”
In its third contest in as
many nights, NU wasn’t partic-
ularly sharp in any facet of the
game.
Leading scorer Jordan Ro-
land labored to get 11 points,
while Hofstra (26-8) dominat-
ed the glass, racking up 13 of-
fensive rebounds and 14 sec-
ond-chance points. The Pride
also outscored the Huskies,
16-1, from the free throw line.
After holding Hofstra to just
29.4 percent from the floor in
the first half, the NU defense
woredownandthePridefired
at a 52.2 percent clip over the
final 20 minutes.
“Playing three games in
three days — it’s tough,” for-
ward Max Boursiquot said. “It’s

called March Madness for a
reason. We just didn’t make
enough plays. So, we fell short.”
NU was hampered by the
limitations of freshman guard
Tyson Walker, who aggravated
his left shoulder injury in the
first half and was not at full
strength during the remainder
of his 18 minutes.
“When he started the sec-
ond half, he just didn’t look
right to me,” Coen said. “I have
to give him a world of credit
just for going out there and try-
ing. I know he wishes he had a
different type of night tonight.”
Boursiquot helped pick up
the slack with Roland and
Walker not producing up to
their norms.
Boursiquot finished with a
team-high 15 points, 9 re-
bounds, and 5 assists, despite
battling the bigger Isaac Kante
on the defensive end of the
floor.
The Huskies got out to a
quick start after giving up the
opening basket of the game,
using an 11-0 burst, keyed by 5
points from Bolden Brace, to
grab an 11-3 advantage.
Northeastern maintained a
comfortable lead for most of
the frame, despite Walker’s ab-
sence.

MIAA DIV. 1 BOYS’ BASKETBALL SEMIFINAL

Lynn English stays on roll

GLOBE CORRESPONDENT

Mansfield 58

For one
more
night,
the city of Lynn took owner-
ship of the parquet floor at TD
Garden.
Lynn English (23-2) domi-
nated the painted area on both
ends to run past Mansfield, 74-
58, in the Division 1 boys’ bas-
ketball state semifinal Tuesday
evening, and will head to
Worcester on Saturday to face
Springfield Central (22-1) in
pursuit of back-to-back state ti-
tles.
“These guys are hungry,”
English coach Antonio Ander-
son said. “They want to win
again and we’ve got a chance to
do that Saturday.”
English got the ball inside
early and often, tallying 56
points in the paint.
It wasn’t just twin towers
Mukeba Jean-Baptiste (20
points) and Ademide Badmus
(8 points, 13 rebounds) doing
the damage down low. Senior
guards Jarnel Guzman (19
points, 3 assists, 3 steals) and
Jack Rodriguez (20 points, 7
rebounds, 6 assists) used their
speed and deft ball-handling to
get inside and finish.
“It allows a guy to have a
day off when other guys can
step up and make things hap-
pen,” Anderson said. “That’s
how we operate. At the end of
the day, when you have a group
of guys who believe in one an-

other and know that anyone
can get to the basket, it makes
it a little easier.”
After a back-and-forth first
quarter, the Bulldogs separated
with an 8-2 run to begin the
second quarter and an 8-2 run
to end the half for a 38-26 lead.
Cincere Gill kept Mansfield
(22-4) afloat with 17 points off
the bench, but the Hornets
couldn’t match the Bulldogs’
athleticism and eventually fell
behind, 57-37. All night Guz-
man, Rodriguez, and Mason
Jean-Baptiste frustrated Mans-
field stars Matt Boen (6 points)
and Sam Stevens (11 points) by
denying them the ball.
“I thought their game plan
was excellent,” Mansfield coach
Mike Vaughan said of English.

“A lot of teams might have one
or two defensive specialists,
but they’ve got three... And
when you overcome that, then
you have to shoot over a 6-8
[Mukeba Jean-Baptiste] and
6-6 [Badmus] kid.”
After scoring 9 points in
overtime to outlast Lowell, 73-
63, in the D1 North final Satur-
day, Rodriguez turned in an-
other stellar closing effort with
12 points in the second half.
“We’ve been [to TD Garden]
before and we came here with
a goal, and a purpose, and
that’s to advance to the next
round,” Rodriguez said. “Since
the season ended last year,
we’ve spent almost every day
together. It feels good to see it
really clicking.”
