“How good a memory do you have?” Cy the Cynic
asked me.
“Good for remembering bridge hands from 30 years ago,”
I said, “but not look-at-a-phone-number-and-remember-it-
long-enough-to-press-seven-buttons good.”
“My partners can’t recall an auction from two minutes
ago,” Cy grumbled.
Today’s South played dangerously high at three spades.
Since his “balancing” bid of one spade could have been
light, North should have passed it. When West led the jack
of diamonds, South took the ace, led a trump to the king
and returned a trump to ... his jack. West won, and the
defense also got three hearts and a club. Down one.
South forgot the auction. East must have a high heart —
probably the king — or else West’s opening lead would have
been a high heart. The opening lead also marks East with
the queen of diamonds, but he couldn’t respond to West’s
opening bid.
West will therefore have the queen of trumps. South
must reject a finesse and instead take the ace and king.

  1. Your partner opens one diamond, you respond one spade
and he bids two clubs. What do you say?

ANSWER:Your partner’s hand is not well defined, and your
best contract is unknown. He could hold K 3, Q 4, K Q 10
7 6, A 8 7 6 (you need to rest at 3NT) or 3, A 4, K Q J 9 4,
AJ 9 6 4 (you would be a favorite at three different slams).
Bid two hearts, a forcing “fourth-suit” action that merely
asks him to keep describing his hand.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYfor Wednes-
day, March 11, 2020:
This year you open up to many
ideasthatcouldcreatepartner-
ships or impact certain relation-
ships. You develop an unusually
creative manner that draws others
to you. If single, you open up to
new possibilities and new people.
You find opportunities that evolve
out of the blue. Others are simply
drawn to you. If attached, the two
of you build an intimate and
strong tie. You really gain from
time spent together. Your creativi-
ty is fed by your tie. You have the
ability to visualize as a couple
what you desire and manifest it.
LIBRA touched you on a deep lev-
el, and you have an equally strong
attachment.
ARIES(March 21-April 19)
Others seek you out for various
reasons. Some of you might won-
der how legitimate their reasons
are. Handle requests with your
schedule in mind. You might not
be able to accomplish what you
want if you don’t. Tonight: The
only answer is yes.
TAURUS(April 20-May 20)
Defer to others concerning a daily
matter. Others’ ideas might work
better than you think, especially if
the suggestion comes up in a
meeting. You also have an inter-
esting approach that could draw
positive results. Tonight: Meet up
with an elusive friend.
GEMINI(May 21-June 20)
You could view a situation far dif-
ferently from others. You will gain
support from a close associate
who supports you and presents
your perspective. Someone could
act in an unpredictable manner!
Tonight: Dinner for two.
CANCER(June 21-July 22)
You might feel awkward dealing
with a family member who chang-
es his or her tune at the last min-
ute. A friend might surprise you
with his or her actions. Both could
impact your mood and flexibility.
Tonight: Surround yourself with
friends.
LEO(July 23-Aug. 22)
Reach out for a friend or loved one
at a distance. You will have a rare
opportunity to catch up on news.
You funnel your energy into a
project that is very important to
you. Tonight: Someone shares
special news.
VIRGO(Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
Defer to a key partner or loved
one. This person has many wild
ideas that he or she does not fol-
low through on. You have the pre-
cision to make a difference. You
could express unusual creativity
with this person. Tonight: Be a
team.
LIBRA(Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
You have the ability to understand
much more than others realize. In
fact, you grasp all the details
around a key project and know
how to push it ahead. A family
matter takes high priority and
needs clearing. Tonight: Schedule
a massage or haircut.
SCORPIO(Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Listen to what someone shares.
You might not want to reveal your
feelings, at least not all of them.
Nevertheless, this conversation is
necessary. Your imagination and
creativity come into play. Tonight:
Acting like a teenager again.
SAGITTARIUS(Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
A meeting could be more signifi-
cant than you realize. A financial
decision might hinge on the na-
ture of this meeting. You create an
unusual opportunity through your
home or a family member. Your fi-
ery side comes out. Tonight: Meet
up with a friend.
CAPRICORN(Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You are willing to assume respon-
sibility, especially if you feel that it
could impact your work and im-
age. You have certain aspirations
that could be fulfilled if you re-
main open to others’ suggestions.
Tonight: Out and about.
AQUARIUS(Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Keep reaching out for more infor-
mation. Make calls, find experts
and ask questions. You could be
surprised, and sometimes uncom-
fortable, with what you hear. To-
night: Do not worry about a fami-
ly member’s unpredictable behav-
ior.
PISCES(Feb. 19-March 20)
Make calls and reach out for
someone who you think is very
easy to speak with. Toss out an
idea over a leisurely meal. You
could be surprised by what you
hear. One-on-one relating is high-
lighted. Tonight: Accept a friend’s
invitation.
