The average cruise may end after seven nights, but

its perks sail on much longer: The mix of travel,

entertainment, and exposure to new experiences

and people boosts your mood and perspective up

to six months beyond your trip, recent research

shows. Making waves are snazzier ships that

benefit your body too. Hop on board!

The Ocean Is Calling

Beat the

Overeat

  1. Plan ahead.
    Cruises have to set
    their menus and buffet
    offerings in advance, so
    ask the concierge desk
    for a rundown upon
    arrival. Having a gener-
    al idea of what you’ll
    want to eat at each
    meal can help you
    avoid impromptu indul-
    gences (and get excited
    for intentional ones).

  2. Focus on how
    you’ll feel.
    On getaways, there’s
    so much emphasis
    on food and alcohol.
    Instead, focus on the
    adventures and experi-
    ences you want to
    have. Will three cook-
    ies with breakfast fuel
    you or make you feel
    groggy and gross all
    day? Let that bench-
    mark guide decisions.

  3. Rethink what
    “free” means.
    We tend to overeat on
    ships because we see
    treats everywhere and
    we’ve already paid for
    them. Ask yourself,
“If I had to buy this now,
would I still eat it?” A
    better way to get your
    money’s worth: Take
    advantage of the state-
    of-the-art gym, grab
    extra fruit for your
    room, or wake up early
    for an epic sunrise.

You don’t have to
take a healthy cruise
to stay on top of
your nutrition goals.
Defeat the “eat
whatever, when-
ever!” mindset that
ships perpetuate,
