MACRAMÉ PLANT HANGERS
and accessories are in vogue
at the moment, however the
knot-tying craft has a long and
rich history. Popular in particular
with sailors, macramé was used
throughout the Victorian era and
again in the 1970s for creating
homewares, such as tablecloths,
wall hangings and clothing.
Do you fancy having a go?
Crafter and author Fanny
Zedenius’s new book, Macramé 2,

guides you through the basics
to build up your skills and
complete beautiful projects. She
explains: ‘This book is an homage
to knots as a phenomenon, as
well as a love letter to macramé
as a craft, and to the creativity
within us all. Macramé relaxes
the mind and reduces stress levels

  • and even anxiety – for so many
    of its practitioners.’

POWERFUL

STORIES

One in six people in the
UK struggle with literacy,
which has a knock-on
effect in their lives. Studies
prove that when children
engage with literature
from a young age, it boosts
their confidence and affords
them greater opportunities.
The Story Museum,
reopening in Oxford on
4 April, is dedicated to
storytelling in all its forms
and aims to enrich lives.
One of its patrons, author
Philip Pullman, explains:
‘The more we understand
stories, the more we know
about ourselves. Besides,
they’re such fun!’
