Escape From
Pretoria
Directed by Francis Annan
BASED ON THE incredible true story and biography of
writer and political activist Tim Jenkin’s imprisonment
and escape from jail in apartheid-era South Africa,
Escape From Pretoria is a tense and moving thriller
which shows humanity at its best and worst.
Daniel Radcli e stars as Jenkin, an anti-apartheid
campaigner who was branded a terrorist and
sentenced to 12 years in the maximum-security
Pretoria Central Prison, dubbed ‘the white man’s
Robben Island’, in the late 1970s. Resolute and brave,
Jenkin worked with fellow campaigners, Stephen Lee
(Daniel Webber of The Punisher and The Dirt) and
Alex Moumbaris (Mark Leonard Winter of The
Dressmaker), to handcraft wooden keys, learn everything
they could about the prison and its layout and, 18 months
into their incarceration, risk everything to escape.
This fi lm brings to life an important time in history,
with edge-of-your-seat tension and emotive scenes.

AS WE TALK more about
the vital role of rewilding
in creating a better future
for our planet, I heartfully
recommend The Lost Words: A Spell Book
by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris.
It was published in 2017 as a response
to the removal of everyday nature words,
such as ‘acorn’, ‘bluebell and ‘kingfi sher’,
from the Oxford Junior Dictionary – and
the addition of ‘blog’, ‘chatroom’ and the
like. Beautifully illustrated with spells
to bring back the magic of nature, it’s
a poignant tome for all generations.
