The table shows that Sainsbury’s is a significantly larger company than Morrisons, with an
annual turnover approximately 50% greater. The former has a market share of nearly 17%,
while the latter’s share is just over 12%. Sainsbury’s has nearly 600 supermarkets, nearly 20%
more than Morrisons, but the significant difference is in the number of convenience stores
operated by each chain. While Sainsbury’s has over 600, Morrisons only has 80. This may
explain the huge difference in pre-tax profits: while Sainsbury’s earned nearly £900 million,
Morrisons recorded a loss of £176 million.
