Cheltenham issues plea to racegoers

Cheltenham racecourse has issued a
plea for racegoers to stay away from
next week’s Festival, which starts on
Tuesday, if they are showing any
symptoms associated with corona-
virus.
The track has put a public health
notice on the British Horseracing
Authority’s administration site, stat-
ing: “Do not travel to the Festival if: you
have any of the following symptoms —
a cough, a high temperature or short-
ness of breath AND: You have been to
or transited through the high-risk
countries, or been in contact with
anyone that has, in the last 14 days.

“To protect yourself and others
please do not travel. These measures are
being taken in order for us to safeguard
everyone’s health and wellbeing during
the current public health situation.
Thank you for your understanding.”
Cheltenham also revealed yesterday
that extra measures had been put in
place at the course to help to combat
the spread of coronavirus. The course
has increased the number of toilets and
handwashing facilities, while antibac-
terial hand gel will also be made avail-
able.
The chances of the meeting being
staged as scheduled appear to be good,
with the racecourse releasing a
statement saying: “British Racing is in
close communication with the UK
Government regarding the current

public health situation. We welcome
their guidance that the business of the
country should continue as usual, while
ensuring the latest public health advice
is adhered to.”
Over £2 million has been traded on
Betfair, the betting exchange, as to whe-
ther the first day of the Cheltenham
Festival will be staged. The market has
fluctuated markedly in the past week
but the meeting is now 1-3 to go ahead.
Delia Bushell, group chief executive
of the Jockey Club, which owns
Cheltenham, said yesterday: “We are as
hopeful as we can be that Cheltenham
will go ahead because we are an
outdoor sport and the restrictions we
have seen elsewhere are about indoor
or confined spaces. We are not the same
as a football match.”

Arum: No Fury-Joshua deal

The promoter of Tyson Fury has
denied claims that a deal for an
all-British heavyweight title clash with
Anthony Joshua is almost done.
Bob Arum, founder of Top Rank and
Fury’s US promoter, dampened the
enthusiasm for a potential December
clash by predicting that the fight would
never happen. Responding to confident
comments from Eddie Hearn, who said
the two promoters were “ready to
conclude the deal”, the 88-year-old also
offered a withering assessment of
Joshua’s ability.
Fury, 31, will defend his WBC title in
a third fight with Deontay Wilder in
Las Vegas in July, after Joshua puts his

WBA, IBF and WBO belts on the line
against Kubrat Pulev, a 38-year-old
Bulgarian, at Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium on June 20.
“Fury-Joshua is never going to
happen,” Arum told The Times. “Pulev
is going to knock Joshua out so why
would I talk to Eddie [Joshua’s
promoter], who I love dearly, about a
Joshua-Fury fight? I think Pulev wins
and then I negotiate with myself to do a
Pulev-Fury fight.
“I am co-promoter of Tyson and the
other co-promoter is Frank Warren. I
would not talk to Eddie about a fight
without Frank’s participation. Frank’s
never even talked with Eddie.”
If Fury and Joshua win their summer
fights then a unification bout still looks
likely, possibly by the end of the year.
