other’s progress and creativity. I am
aware of many real life-long friendships
that have been formed through Instagram
as a result of liking and commenting on
each other’s #edsanimals posts.

It is both inspiring and motivating for
me to be a part of what happens to
my patterns once they go into print,
especially when they are translated into
so many languages and travel around
the world into many different cultures.
On any given day I am likely to be tagged
in posts in German, Russian and Korean
with lots from the USA and Australia. I
could have never dreamed that I would
end up with fans that I could chat
with around the whole world- brought
together by our common love for hooking
up Emma the Bunny for example!

Having this much two-way interaction
on social media is incredibly rewarding,
but can also come with drawbacks for
a small business owner. It’s diffi cult
to be disciplined enough to not let it
encroach into too much time in your
day, and a thick skin is essential at
times especially as customer service
comes directly through to you 24
hours a day. If you’re not careful,
you fi nd it in your hand everywhere
from when you’re watching TV on an
evening, when you’re out for a meal with
friends or even lying in bed last thing at
night before going to sleep. For me it’s
important to be able to switch off and
run a different public and personal social
media accounts – so I can still fi nd all the
photos of my friend’s babies in amongst
all the amazing crochet posts.
