THE BEST GAMES

WE’RE PLAYING AND

WHY WE LOVE THEM

Rob’s
choice
BATTLEFIELD V
There’s nothing more
satisfying than
capturing a flag with
the rest of your squad and fending
off the neverending horde in
multiplayer. Even better is when
you’re all in tanks and your score is
40-2! Huuurraaah!

Adam’s
choice
MASS EFFECT 2
In spite of everyone
on my friends list
playing Anthem I
decided to spend this month
playing the best BioWare game of
all, Mass Effect 2. No matter how
many times I play through it, I never
seem to tire of it.

THE BEST FILMS AND TV THIS MONTH

films tv

LES MISERABLES
FOR FANS OF Poldark
If you can never sit through Les Mis
because of all the singing, we sympathise.
And that’s why you should watch the BBC’s
beautiful new songless adaptation.
Lavishly produced, the lives of Fantine,
Cosette and Jean Valjean intertwine.

VELVET BUZZSAW
FOR FANS OF Nocturnal Animals, I Know What
You Did Last Summer
The director of Nightcrawler guns for the
world of high art. When a young curator
finds the hidden magnum opus of a lost
genius, everyone falls under its spell. But
this fairytale has a rotten core.

BARRY S1
FOR FANS OF Fargo, Killing Eve
One of the strangest comedies of the past
year, Barry sees Bill Hader play a hitman who
becomes involved with a theatre troupe on
his way to take out a target. Hader relishes
the role of the weary assassin, while the
deadpan comedy is always a treat.

ISLE OF DOGS
FOR FANS OF Fantastic Mr Fox, Akira
Wes Anderson’s most magical films have
often been his animated ones. Isle Of Dogs
could also be his best, with a breathtaking
descent into a dystopian Japan where a
young boy is parted from his beloved dog
and embarks on a quest to rescue him.

STAR TREK:
DISCOVERY S2
FOR FANS OF Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars
We’re getting to the halfway point of Star
Trek: Discovery’s second season and it
remains the most riveting series on Netflix.
What is the red angel? What’s wrong with
Spock? Will Michael and Ash be reunited?

BELLE DE JOUR
FOR FANS OF The Duke Of Burgundy
Take a moment to educate yourself on
some classic cinema with Belle De Jour. A
world away from Fifty Shades Of Grey, the
1967 film stars French ingénue Catherine
Deneuve as the bored, dissatisfied
housewife who turns to escorting.

THE TALE
FOR FANS OF Sharp Objects
Hot off the heels of Twin Peaks and Big Little
Lies, Laura Dern again proves that she is
one of most talented actors working today.
In The Tale Dern plays Jennifer Fox, a
filmmaker who must come to terms with the
sexual abuse she endured as a child.

SOLO
FOR FANS OF Star Wars, Cowboy Bebop
Solo deserves a reassessment on its arrival
to NowTV. A tangle of space western,
fairytale and coming-of-age adventure,
Solo sees the young hero during the first
steps of his story, brushing up against the
empire and his own insecurity.

RUSSIAN DOLL
FOR FANS OF Black Mirror, Happy Death Day
The supercool Russian Doll is Netlix’s
answer to Groundhog Day, about a software
engineer who falls into a time loop. The
conceit may feel a little overdone by now,
but this is a fantastic, zany series to binge
in one sitting.

THE FOUNDER
FOR FANS OF The Social Network, Three
Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
This biopic delves beneath the squashed
burgers and greasy wrappers of McDonalds
and into the story of a travelling milkshake
machine salesman who saw the
opportunity of a lifetime.

UMBRELLA ACADEMY
FOR FANS OF Titans, Watchmen
It’s time for a new superhero team-up, and
this time it’s the misfits of Gerard Way’s
comic book Umbrella Academy. A troubled
group of former superhero children reunite
following their mentor’s death and are
tasked with averting an apocalypse.

MOLLY’S GAME
FOR FANS OF I Tonya, Steve Jobs
It’s hard to think of modern cinema without
the acidic wit of Aaron Sorkin’s dialogue. In
Molly’s Game, Sorkin takes on the story of
Hollywood’s poker princess Molly Bloom,
who ran America’s most notorious poker
empire. A flawed but fun biopic.

Drew’s
choice
APEX LEGENDS
At the time of writing
this I just unlocked
Mirage, and I’ve been
using the tricksy prankster to
bamboozle and befuddle enemy
squads. He’s a showboating
asshole, which is probably why I like
playing as him so much.
