if you hope to hold your own against
these menacing machines. But there’s
also a mystery for you to solve, and
by exploring you’ll uncover, piece by
piece, what happened and maybe
bring everyone back. Provided the
robots haven’t killed them all.
The game is huge, so you’ll be
doing a lot of exploring. Any location

you see in the distance is reachable.
To achieve this, Avalanche is taking
advantage of its very own Apex
engine, which, as well as helping the
games look nice, is perfectly adapted
to handle large open worlds. It’s the
same engine used for most Avalanche
titles, including Mad Max, the Just
Cause series and most recently for its
id Software collaboration, Rage 2.

Look the part
You’ll be able to customise your
character by picking up new clothes
and equipment. Each item will not
only make you look good, but will also
offer stat bonuses. Progression in
the game consists of spending skill
points in four different skill trees:
combat, support, survival and tech.
Focusing on a particular skill tree
will give you different ways to play.
Combat will predictably improve your
effectiveness in battle, altering traits
like weapon power and handling.
Support will slot snugly into a medic
role. Survival will be the tree for those
that prefer to work alone. And finally,
tech will let you make better use of
your explosives. Playing with a group
and combining different specialities
will give you a well-rounded team
that’ll be better equipped to surviving
against whatever is thrown at you. If
you don’t want to play with others,
that’s fine, too; it’s possible to play
the whole game all by yourself, giving
you the freedom to explore at your
own pace. But be warned, enemies will
be more difficult while playing solo.
We’ve been looking forward to this
title for quite a while, even if its just
to give us an excuse to pump out
some classic ’80s pop tunes. Roll

Avalanche Studios has been
drip-feeding us information about its
fantastic-looking ’80s sci-fi co-op
survival game, and we are eager
to get our hands on the finished
product. Well, that wait will soon be
over because Avalanche has now
announced that the game will be
releasing at the end of the month.
It has a pretty simple set-up.
Situated in ’80s Sweden, a bunch
of friends head out on a boat for a
little getaway, but upon their return
their boat gets shot at and capsizes.
Swimming ashore, they discover that
their home is now a very different
place. No sign of human life can be
seen, and the whole place is crawling
with hostile robots. You’ll need to
scavenge for supplies and resources
