TITANFALL 2
Following the multiplayer-only original,
Respawn surprised us in the sequel with
one of the most original campaigns in
years. Bursting with expertly designed
levels, it dabbles in everything from
parkour platforming puzzles to time
travel mechanics, to thrilling effect.
Online matches shine thanks to their
unique rhythm – you start off as a
hyper-agile pilot, able to wall-run, slide,
double-jump, and more, but the better
you play on-foot, the sooner you can
call down your massive mech suit and
start stomping around the battlefield
dispensing justice. Respawn is back with
battle royale FPS Apex Legends – see our
review on page 82 this issue!

DOOM (2016)
Doom has always been a classic in the
realm of first-person shooters. Hell, it
pretty much invented the damned genre
in the first place. The reboot that was
released in 2016 was the huge power
fantasy that everyone was waiting for.
The movement of the Doom Slayer is
swift, the combat tight, the weapons
huge, loud and ridiculously powerful and
the glory kills offer up pure senseless
violence. It’s great, simple as that. We’re
excited for Doom Eternal, of course, but
that’s looming somewhere over in the
middle-distance, so at present this is the
only and best choice if you’re looking to
play a mindless but massively fun
first-person shooter.

OVERWATCH
Teamwork makes the dream work in Blizzard’s
hugely popular competitive shooter. With
its focus on clever use of your abilities over
twitchy aiming, it’s both super accessible
to FPS newcomers and packed with tactical
depth for genre veterans. Each of its lovable
characters boasts a totally unique set of
powers – from gorilla scientist Winston’s
berserker rage and jet-powered leap, to
roller-skating DJ Lucio’s wall-running and
knockback blast – ensuring an impressive
level of variety to the game, which consists of
various modes involving two teams of six. And
thanks to the regular addition of new heroes,
the game has only grown since its launch
back in 2016.

HALO: THE

MASTER CHIEF
COLLECTION
Halo was always going to appear on this list,
but choosing a single title as the best is just
too darn difficult, so we cheated and chose
Halo: The Master Chief Collection instead.
Halo: Combat Evolved didn’t just prove that
you could do great first-person shooters on
consoles, but it created a science fiction
story that was much more compelling than
people initially thought and set a solid
foundation for the rest of the franchise.
Then there’s Halo 2 which single-handedly
changed the world of competitive online
multiplayer forever, specifically in the way
it handled player matchmaking. It was
so impressive Microsoft sought Bungie’s
expertise in the development of its Xbox
Live service. Halo: TMCC brings together
remastered versions of Halo 1-4 and
contains 45 campaign missions and over
100 multiplayer and Spartan Ops maps, and
owning it is essential. Q
