Guide to Quilting 107

Working with Blocks

T

he term ‘cornerstones’ refers
to simple squares of fabric
which can be sewn into each
corner of a quilt border. They’re
ideal for introducing an accent
colour or pretty print to a quilt and
just right for jazzing plain borders!

In the six steps below, we show you the
simple way to add cornerstones to a quilt,
sewing them to the border strips before
attaching to opposite sides of the quilt.
Always remember to include seam
allowances when you cut your fabric.
Once you’ve tried this method then

you can get creative with the design
of cornerstones. Not only could you use
different fabrics for an eclectic look, the
squares themselves can be a patchwork of
shapes. Half Square Triangles would
look great, or if your quilt has more than
one border, add cornerstones to each one!
