REVERSE STITCHING
Most machines have a
button or switch that
enables you to sew in the
reverse direction. It’s the
best technique to start
and finish off your sewing,

The foot pedal is pressure-
sensitive and dictates the
pace of your stitching.
Some machines have a
start/stop button so you
don’t need the pedal, but
it’s good to have both
hands free for sewing.STITCH LENGTH
A dial, knob or setting within the
computerised menu will enable
you to change your stitch
length of your stitches, whether
they’re simple straight stitches,
zigzags or any other pattern.STITCH SELECTOR
Dials, switches, knobs, digital
keypad... the method used
to change the stitch type
varies between machines,
but the principle is the
same. For a basic quilting,
project you’ll probably find
straight stitch is all you need.STITCH WIDTH
Sometimes this function is built in, so the
machine adjusts as you change the
stitch type. If your machine has a dial,
leave the width at 0 for straight stitches.
For other stitches, adjust as needed.THREAD FEED
Your thread runs from the
top of your machine through
a series of channels and
loops before reaching the
needle. You can adjust a
dial or digital display to set
the tension you require.
HAND WHEEL
Use this to move the
needle up and down
manually. It’s essential for
controlling the sewing line
in tight spots and corners.
To avoid your thread
getting caught or
tangled, make sure you
always turn the wheel
towards you.Manual or
computerised?
For most projects, a
manual machine will
do what you need, but computerised
models can make life a lot easier. Stitch
length and stitch style can be set at the
touch of a button, and some will even
remember your favourite stitches.
Other features can include ‘locking
stitch’ to give a neat finish, buttonhole
options, and even a thread cutter.
Computerised machines are better at
handling thick fabrics. These benefits
mean computerised machines cost
more, although as you move up in price
from entry level models you’ll find more
features and accessories are available.
