It’s with a heavy heart that I announce this will be the last issue of
Computer Arts to go on sale. As many of you will understand all too well,
the Covid-19 pandemic has had a dramatic effect on more than the health
of the world; it’s had a seismic impact on businesses big and small, and
Computer Arts – and its publishing company Future – is no exception.
It’s not a decision lightly taken. With no footfall predicted at the UK’s
newsstands for the next six months, stockpiled issues on hold from flying
out to the US and Europe, and difficulties with printing and distributing
the magazine, we would have stood to have made a loss for the financial
year – and that is the bottom line.
It’s an absurd situation in a way, as Computer Arts retains a passionate,
inquisitive, and to my mind fucking awesome reader base: an engaged
and creative lot who are aware of the magazine’s 25-year legacy, and
excited about the future of creative design and illustration... Believe me,
the team suggested many alternatives to simply closing the title for good
- going digital for a time, postponing the mag for some months, making
the magazine for subscribers only... to no avail.
And so I want to send a sincere thank you to everyone who’s been
involved in Computer Arts over the years. Thank you to everyone who’s
already got in touch to share their condolences, and of course to all
creatives out there trying to make great work, make a difference. It’s for
you that Computer Arts has striven to be the best design mag out there,
and it’s thanks to you that we’ve had such a fulfilling time doing it!
It’s been a real privilege to get to know so many awesome people in
this industry, and from me and the CA team – we wish you all the best.
End of an era...
FAREWELL
