1st Prize Nature (singles)
Frogs with their legs severed and surrounded by frogspawn struggle to
surface, after being thrown back into the water in Covasna, Eastern
Carpathians, Romania, in April 2018. This striking shot both fascinated and
disgusted in equal measures, and has obviously been executed with a huge degree
of skill. Frogs’ legs are frequently harvested for food in the spring, when males and
females gather to mate and spawn.

This is a fascinating frame which gives you
something new to look at every time you look
back at it. It shows boxer Maureen Ajambo (30)
training at the Rhino Boxing Club in Katanga, a
large slum settlement in Kampala, Uganda, on
24 March. Ajambo is a mother of seven and
boxes in the Ugandan women’s team. Women’s
issues were also extremely prevalent at the
World Press Photo Awards, with images like
this delivering an empowering message.
