Forthistrip,I useda NikonD810 and D850
withtheAF-SNikkor24-70mm f/2.8G ED,
AF-SNikkor70-200mmF/2.8G ED VR II and
AF-SNikkor85mmf/1.4Glenses. As the
conditionswerequitedusty,I tried not
to changelensestoomuch.So I predominantly
shotwiththe70-200mmand85mm. For occasional
wideangleshots,I usedthe24-70mm. All these lense
helpedmeto capturethelight, colour, emotion,
insight,characterandspiritof the people. In the
rightlightattherighttime,the ordinary becomes
extraordinaryandthatis something to strive for.

Th e people relentlessly brush TREVOR’S KIT
around the huge camp ensuring
it stays organised despite the
huge number of cattle and
smaller number of goats. Th e
cattle are tied to pegs at night
to ensure their security – they
basically have their own parking
places. Th ere are forked sticks
(small trunks) spaced around the
camp which the night watchers
and guards climb onto with
their weapons to watch over
their wealth.

In the evenings, the air is fi lled
with smoke from the dung and
wood fi res to keep insects at bay.
Th e dust helps to dry the dung
which is laboriously collected and
piled in the mornings; it is then
used as fuel. As the sun sets,
smoke and dust create an ethereal
atmosphere making it appear as if
the Mundari and their cattle are
fading into an ancient mist,
trapped in time, where traits and
traditions are perpetuated in
the 21st century.
